Green Swamp Kauri is a very rare and precious find. Possible reasons for the green colouring are a chemical reaction between the gum or resin within the Kauri and Tea tree oil from Tea tree that have been buried alongside the Kauri. Another possibility is some sort of reaction in a marine mud environment, maybe the salt reacting with the gum. Possibly both.

It seems clear the green colour occurs when there is a lot of gum present in the timber, for example around knots or pressure points in the wood.
